Title

Abstract

Perhaps the personalized activities recommender (from now on PAR) is not as fast as Superman in saving the planet, but it offers a long-term solution in which superpowers are not required. As we are studying electrical engineering, we have clear vision of PAR as website supported by a user friendly mobile application where all you need is account on the website and will to have fun (yes, our goal is the site and the app to be free)! In other words, PAR is fun detector which will be beyond the state of the art in this field. The aim of our solution is to recommend meaningful, fun and environment friendly activities. By activity we mean everything that can be regarded as one: from workshops, DIY projects to doing sports and volunteering. The recommendations are based on previous calculations that include the interests and abilities of the user. For every user, the crucial step to precisely calculated recommendations is giving feedback after each activity done. But, not only recommends, the PAR also calculates how the activity will affect on your personal development and on the planet, if you make it. Therefore, beside saving the planet, the user can make self-evaluation and improve his/her quality of life. However, these are not the only functions that the fun detector has to offer. As an addition, it connects people with same interests locally and globally. Currently, this kind of people is connected with on-line forums. But forums’ disadvantage is that they cannot be global and local at the same time. With PAR, we overcome that problem. Frankly, we would not have this clear vision about PAR if we did not make an interview with Derek Sivers, by transforming his answers into advices. One of them was the advice that we should present a single idea, one at a time, and let others (the users of our fun detector) build upon it. In our opinion, PAR is capable of reaching Facebook’s popularity, because every day more and more people realise that saving the planet is more important than self-promotion and Farmville. Imagine how wonderful world it will be if people spend their energy in fun and eco activities instead of trying to make the perfect duck face in front of the mirror!

Cute, the seven dwarfs were a nice touch:)
But the algorithm to calculate fun must be quite complex?

Priyanka, thank for the comment:).

The algorithm will calculate fun based on information it get from the user.
Its complexity can be reduced by dividing it to simpler and smaller steps. But you are right, there is mathematics and statistical research behind:)

A lot depends of what kind of information we collect and
These algorithms are indeed so good as are the information we have. So, we have to decide to pick most efficient info:).

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate:).

good question priyanka :)
the complexity doesn't have to be taken as a disadvantage, but on the contrary. due to it's complexity and background, the algorithm is an excellent base for research on which many grad students can work and un-complex it :). therefore, it opens new industrial and academic opportunities.

cheers :)

hey well done... :)
Every idea in this competition is meant for a noble cause..
And everyone is running blindly to get more accolades for their own idea.. We all are trying to gather and convince friends to vote for us..
But as a part of this competition, we ourselves should motivate eachother.. for a while we should keep the competition aside.. and we should look into all our felllow competitor's ideas.. and should encourage the idea they came up with for the noble cause..
Lets keep aside the competitive feelings aside.. and lets vote for all the ideas we consider worthy in our perspective...
lets encourage each other ideas.. I will vote for you as i liked your idea.. and for all other ideas as well which i liked..
Join me in this drive of voting and encouraging your those fellow competitors.. WHOSE IDEAS YOU FEEL ARE WORTHY...
If you like mine, you are cordially invited to vote for our idea too....

And If you don't like, we would love to have your opinion on how can we improve on our idea :)
