Abstract

We proposed to develop a project which would use a three dimensional interactive platform to impart knowledge using 3D sensing platform and audio-visual methods to teach underprivileged kids. This will solve the problem of availability of teacher and physical resources to an extent. This project will prove to be a vital breakthrough for all sections of the society as it will benefit small school kids, physically handicapped ND even blind children. This had been the main motive behind the idea which we presented that involved the usage of an interactive platform and digital media to impart education as used these days in online games and recently launched 3D platform based Kinect Gaming Technology. This technology can be used to impart soft skills training to unskilled labour or create a virtual school in any remote area of the earth. We have worked in the direction by teaching 250 small children by using audio-visual inputs, by imparting lectures to blinds by audio media and by teaching physically handicapped with flash games and videos.

Challenge

Title

Abstract

With the rise in intrusion of technology in daily lives for the haves and the increasing need for more hands to work to feed more mouths for the have-nots, the focus is increasingly shifting away from education in the modern world. Children who have access to good books and tutors disregard them as uninteresting and instead want to play the next iPad game online. The have-nots who do not get two scanty meals a day, let alone good education, spend all their childhood doing menial jobs or supporting their family by learning the family’s traditional occupation and continuing it for no one would be there to teach them more than that or a new skill. It is to solve these problems of two entirely different worlds that we propose forward to C:F, the development of an interactive universal educational interface which can detect natural gestures of a person standing in front and can respond to his movement and actions. Such technologies are already in existence and being extensively deployed to develop gaming applications. Using such a medium, education and learning will become fun and interactive, thus increasing both enthusiasm and depth of learning in an individual. Meaningful education and vocational skills can be imparted to children in remote places without the limitations of the absence of a suitable teacher or physical material to learn new skills. Imagine a world where a potter’s son is chiseling away in thin air and learning to create human sculptures, a world where the daughter of a housemaid is stroking artworks or creating music from the ‘virtual’ violin using the broom needle standing in front of this device, a world where the child plays and campaigns with Joan of Arc to learn history, a world without boundaries where every child can think, imagine and learn whatever skill they wanted to and never leave it to chance to stumble upon a suitable teacher and then learn it. With Desire | Innovate | Achieve, we dare to dream of a future where use of technological innovations like the 3D motion capture technology for education would trigger more developments in this direction and help revitalize the meaning and impact of education. We propose to pilot run this idea by developing applications to teach a specific set of vocational skills to children with no access to education, and based on the success achieved, to rope in industrial partners for bootstrapping this new educational paradigm.
